Successful applicants will be required to publish their service standards and quarterly uptime information of each fast charger on a public platform for a minimum of six months after energization.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here\u2019s a look at what the program includes, what the requirements are for participation, how much money you can expect to receive, and how SWTCH can work with you to secure ZEVIP funding.<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the NRCan ZEVIP program, and what funding does it offer?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) created the \u201cZero Emissions Vehicle Infrastructure Program,\u201d or \u201cZEVIP,\u201d to speed up the installation of public and private EV charging stations across the country.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The specific amount of money available through ZEVIP depends on the type and number of EV charging connectors in your project, as well as whether the chargers are Level 2 chargers or DC Fast Chargers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ZEVIP program will pay a maximum of $5,000,000 per project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note that where the typical benefit covers up to 50% of costs, indigenous businesses and communities funded through the program can receive up to 75% of costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Level 2 chargers &#8211; Up to 50% of costs, max $5k per connector<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For projects involving Level 2 chargers, ZEVIP will cover up to 50% of the costs, up to a maximum of $5,000 per connector.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order for a project to be eligible for the program, at least 20 chargers must be installed. This can be all Level 2 chargers or a mix of Level 2 and DCFC chargers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Individual connectors can count towards the minimum of 20 only if each connector can charge a vehicle at the same time. To be an eligible location, it needs to have one of:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A minimum of two (2) independent, stand-alone fast chargers of 100 kW and above, available 24\/7.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A minimum of one independent fast charger of 100 kW co-located with existing fast charging infrastructure that brings the power output of a site to at least 150 kW, available 24\/7.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note: Co-located L2 chargers at these locations are eligible for funding as well.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Priority may be given when an application has more than 50% of stations planned for areas on the \u201c<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/search.open.canada.ca\/openmap\/fb7dd0e4-2feb-4fc1-96e7-aa626109f09c\"><b>EV Public Charging Planning Map<\/b><\/a><b>\u201d that are ranked as a highest priority (i.e. \u201c5\u201d).\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>Community Public Charging Infrastructure<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An eligible project must increase the number of public EV chargers in communities where gaps still exist* and must include the installation of:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A minimum of two (2) fast chargers of 50 kW and above, available for use 24\/7 or at least as frequently as the business operating hours of the site host; OR<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If installing less than two fast chargers of 50 kW and above, a minimum of twenty (20) chargers of all ZEVIP eligible technologies, available for use 24\/7 or at least as frequently as the business operating hours of the site host (combination of L2 and fast chargers)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>*NRCan will assess community public charging needs on a square kilometre basis, that will include criteria such as population density, EV registration, existing public EV chargers, expected EV adoption, distance travelled per day and building types.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"color: #30d7ba;\"><b>Stream: Private Charging<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The private charging stream targets <\/span><b>existing buildings <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Multi Unit Residential Buildings (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MURBs), workplaces, and where on-road vehicle fleets are serviced).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>MURBs <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are considered to be buildings that include a common entrance and have a minimum of three (3) storeys or a footprint greater than 600 m2.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Workplaces <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are locations where employees perform the duties related to a job. Can be open to the public after office hours.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>On-road fleets <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are owned or leased by an organization and used in support of organizational or business operations and activities. An example of this would be taxi depots.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the private charging stream, the chargers can be a mix of private, shared, or public access, and each application needs to be installing at least 20 Level 2 chargers.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The definition of an \u201cexisting building\u201d is defined by having their occupancy permit issued as of May 2024.<\/span><b> EV charging projects in new buildings (those without a occupancy permit, or a permit issued after May 2024) are not eligible for funding.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What expenses does ZEVIP cover?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this round of ZEVIP, regardless of which stream you\u2019re applying to, the following expenses are eligible for funding:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EV Charging Equipment (EVSE)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professional Services (ex. Installation, construction, testing and commissioning)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Permits<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Capital Expenses (ex. SWTCH handled the application with NRCan under the 2021 ZEVIP grant.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/swtchenergy.com\/torontos-financial-district-sees-ample-ev-charging-as-a-necessity\/\">Read the article here.<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><b>Why it\u2019s so important to act now &amp; claim funding through ZEVIP<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the last RFP intake of ZEVIP under the current allocation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, what is very likely to happen is the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within just a few years, the majority of cars sold will be electric. A few years after that, virtually all of them will be<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tenants in apartments and condo buildings, as well as office workers, will consider it a priority to have easy access to EV charging when selecting places to live and work<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without programs like ZEVIP, EV chargers will be more costly to install\u2014and buildings that already have chargers will see a nice boost to their property values<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if you are not quite ready to start your project, you should still consider applying for ZEVIP. In our experience, the process of evaluating the applications can take 6-8 months, and once your project is approved, you have another 12-18 months before the charging system gets installed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t want to find yourself in a situation of finally realizing you need EV chargers, only to discover there\u2019s no funding available to help you get them installed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Securing ZEVIP funding, step by step<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though projects will differ in the details, the process for applying for ZEVIP funding remains the same.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Complete the application package request form.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You must include all supporting documentation requested in the Applicant\u2019s Guide and in the Application Form.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Submit your proposal using the program application package.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is highly recommended that you do so well in advance of the submission deadline.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Wait for your application\u2019s review by the program administrator. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provided your proposal meets ZEVIP\u2019s mandatory criteria, it will then be rated and ranked according to merit criteria (see below for more information on both sets of criteria). If accepted, you will receive a letter of conditional approval (LOCA). If not accepted, you will be informed in writing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Due diligence assessment. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following your conditional approval, you will be re-examined to ascertain your financial status and ability to complete the project you applied for.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Final approval. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After passing all prior steps, you will receive final approval and an agreement to sign in order to proceed with your project\u2019s funding.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Reporting and monitoring, if applicable.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you\u2019re unsure of any of these steps, the overall process, or how best to proceed, <a href=\"https:\/\/swtchenergy.com\/contact\/\">reach out to our team<\/a>. We\u2019ve secured millions of dollars for our customers and know how to craft a perfect application, and we\u2019ll be delighted to help you through the process.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Going deeper: mandatory eligibility criteria for your chargers<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond the hardware requirements listed at the top of this article, there are a number of additional requirements for a project to be eligible for ZEVIP funding.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Organization types<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following types of organizations are eligible for funding.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Electric utilities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multifamily property owners and operators<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commercial building owners and operators<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indigenous businesses &amp; community groups<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Industry associations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Academic institutions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provincial, territorial, regional, and municipal governments<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note that individuals cannot apply for funding through ZEVIP.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Additional requirements<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, there are a number of additional requirements for ZEVIP funding meant, in essence, to confirm that your project will be able to deliver on what you are proposing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TIMELINE<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your project must be on track for completion within 30 months of the signing of the contribution agreement.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FUNDING<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You must be able to demonstrate that you have at least 50% of the funding required for your share of the project\u2019s cost. This is done through completion of a proof of funding form that indicates whether the funds are to come from your organization or from another contributor or investor.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UTILITY APPROVAL<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your project will increase the site\u2019s electrical load by 50kW or more, you must demonstrate that you have communicated this to the relevant utility and that they have confirmed an ability to meet this increased demand. This can be communicated through email notice sent to the utility company, exchange of emails\/letters, or a proper site assessment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SITE ACCESS<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You must be able to demonstrate either ownership or access and permission to use the intended installation site for the chargers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This will take the form of either proof of ownership, proof of lease, a legal agreement, or a memorandum of understanding.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CONNECTIVITY<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the Private Stream, they require that chargers are connected to a server.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the Public Stream, they require to be networked to ensure effectively monitoring, reporting and data collection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Next stage: An assessment of merit-based eligibility criteria<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provided your project meets the mandatory requirements outlined above, the merits of your proposed project will be assessed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The criteria being looked at cover a number of different dimensions, but here are some of the most important.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How well does your project meet the needs of the community, residents, or visitors?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What will your pricing and usage policies be?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does your project include investment or participation from indigenous businesses or communities?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How were your sites selected, and do you have the required permits (or is permitting in the works)?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you have more than 50% of your portion of the funding already secured?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who are your equipment suppliers, installers, etc.?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is your plan to promote the chargers to their intended audience?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are your plans for ensuring smooth operation and proper maintenance?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though ZEVIP applications may seem to be fairly long and detailed, they\u2019re well worth the effort\u2014especially if you\u2019re offloading some or all of the work of applying to a partner like SWTCH.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Connect with us today to discuss your project in detail and learn how we can support you in receiving funding.
